Prelude to Botanical Treasures of Mt. Shasta & Adjacent Areas
| Map & Area Information This CD and website is the prelude to a long term project to provide information and visual identification of plants of Mt. Ashland, Mt. Eddy, Mt. Shasta, Castle Crags and surrounding areas. These mountains and their intervening regions were chosen because of their accessibility and for their rich and diverse flora. This plant diversity reflects the differences in geology and the localized climates of each site. Evidence of volcanic and glacial activity, faulting and uplift, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks, granitic spires and fossils (marine and terrestrial) are nearby. In addition, Siskiyou county is at the intersection of two floral transects: a north-south line connecting the arctic and tropical and an east-west line connecting the high desert of the Great Basin and the Pacific coast. All of this means we enjoy a rather unique floral opportunity. The intended beneficiaries of this photo CD and website are the students of Field Botany, Field Natural History classes and the general public. This effort will be followed by a book illustrating a broader sampling of the common, some uncommon, and striking flowers along with familiar and important woody plants. Click to view map of area. |
