Heart Vigil
Will it happen tonight that he's carried on home, taken from us at last on his own. No more worries about who has what, nor what can he give, with heart never shut. Somehow I tell myself, that if he makes it tonight, he'll still be here long to chase away fright. If these hours he still belongs to us all, we'll have him for good, or perhaps 'till next fall. Have I cherished him enough, and told him so, what he's meant to me, as he's watched me grow? Or will I not know until he's long gone, just how much I love him, with love that goes on.
