Creepy Crawlers was the original Thing-Maker toy. (picture courtesy of the John Kolesar collection) and was full of nifty and tiny creatures for children to make in various colors. The original set (if you can find one in mint condition) came with clear plastic for insect wings which you could glue onto the dragonfly, bee, and other flying insect bodies. This set was avaliable with a normal box or a special 'foil' box. This original edition of this set evidently came with bottles of goop with a picture of an insect on them (could have been an ant). This set had a huge number of molds so I will attempt to describe them. Mold #2 does not actually have a '2' printed on it the rest of the set is numbered. Creatures are listed from largest to smallest.
Many of these wee beasties are obviously flying creatures yet none of the molds have wings! The answer was, as usual, rather simple. This first set came with clear plastic sheets for wings. In the back of the instruction manual (provided by John Kolsear) there was a set of templates which you could trace onto the plastic and then cut out. This also shows how to cut the insect bodies to insert the wings and then glue them in place. The complete set of templates is reproduced below at screen resolution. You could trace them onto a piece of plastic directly from the monitor with a sharpe marker but I highly reccomend printing them out and then tracing them on the paper. This will increase the usefulness and life expectency of your computer monitor.
To aid collector below is a picture of all the molds in the set arranged by thier respective part numbers. There were nine molds in this set. This should aid you if you are trying to collect a set of molds one or two at a time. The picture of the box at the top of the page was from a foil wrapped Creepy Crawler box. It is uncertian if there was ever a "Play Pak" set of this product.
