PRODUCTION NOTES

The year is 2319. An atomic holocaust has shattered earth, extinguishing all forms of global communication, resulting in the formation of pocket civilizations -- each a separate, isolated entity, with its members totally unaware of the existence of anyone but themselves. LOGAN'S RUN, MGM Television's exciting new science fiction series for CBS, explores the adventures of Logan and Jessica, traveling through these bizarre futuristic societies.

Produced with intelligence and imagination by Ivan Goff and Ben Roberts, LOGAN'S RUN stars Gregory Harrison as Logan, Heather Menzies as Jessica, 'Donald Moffat as their cyborg friend Rem, and Randy Powell as Francis, the Sandman, who is pursing them.

Leonard Katzman produces the series, based on a novel by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson which became an Oscar-winning motion picture.

"The series revolves around the human dilemmas encountered by our four main characters as they confront new cultures existing in total isolation," relates Ben Roberts.

"They must deal, not only with the radical technology of these strange societies, but with human problems as well." Adds Ivan Goff, "Although LOGAN'S RUN takes place in a futuristic time frame that is stunning in its technological gadgetry, psychologically Logan and Jessica face the same concerns that perplexed Adam and eve. Technology changes, but human architecture remains the same."

Logan and J(ssica escaped from the precisely programmed world of the Domed City where population control is achieved by inhabitants volunteering (at age 30) for Carousel, a spectacular extermination ceremony.

Those who refuse Carousel and opt to run, are hunted and killed by Sandmen, the policemen of the Domed City. Logan, a Sandman, rejects the institution of Carousel, and with Jessica, he flees the Domed City to search for Sanctuary in the outside world.

Although they encounter diverse civilizations -- .some enticing, some threatening -- they have a goal that prevents them from settling anywhere.

They left a civilization where everyone (except the elders) faced needless extinction at 30. Determined to save as many of their friends as possible, they hope, once having found Sanctuary, to return to the Domed City with other Runners and disprove the institution of Carousel.

This obligation to those they left behind motivates their quest for other Runners who went in search of Sanctuary.

Rem, their cyborg companion, functions as the key to the Outside World, since he has a story of knowledge fed into his computer by the masters who conceived him in the Mountain City.

Although an android, and therefore less than human, Rem slowly, by exposure to Logan and Jessica, assimilates some of their human

characteristics.

As for Logan and Jessica, when exposed to the Outside, they are true innocents, straining toward the maturity they were never intended to reach in a civilization where life ended at thirty.
