SERVING THE TRANSFORMERS COMMUNITY SINCE 1998

There is a new surge of  Transformers fandom slowly rising to the surface. We're not talking about the short-lived fandom created by nefarious Michael Bay. This is about the much talked-about upcoming CGI series: Transformers: Prime. While no plot has been revealed, the exciting factor of the series is that the two main actors will lend their original voices to Transformers' most loved characters, Optimus Prime and Megatron.  While fans hold their breath for something extreme in the animation and action departments, there necessitates a cause to consider what made Transformers so popular to begin with.

It wasn't the fights, the toys (though some fans may argue on that point) and it wasn't the comics or the Bay films. Transformers rose to popularity due to story telling and the characters. were it not for Bob Budinsky's characterization of those robotic imports from Japan , there would never have been an Optimus Prime. There would never have been Bumblebee. They would have just been fancy pieces of plastic, forgotten along the long line of cool oddities.

More than that, came the stories. Transformers wasn't about the big booms, the fancy shifting of one shape to another; it was about a megania-long war. Transformers were *people*, first, a race of creatures whose lives were of nothing but war, strife, survival and grief.  Their struggle makes for a riveting story. Couple that with such talented actors as Peter Cullen who lent his skills into a two-dimensional character and you have a recipe for something that's more than just a story; now it becomes memorable.

We are hoping Transformers Prime will do justice where the long line of poorly dubbed Japanese animation series has failed, and Bayfilms have scarred the face of something that touched the lives of those who grew up 25 years ago.

We're hoping to fall in love with Transformers all over again.

WINDING ROAD

Rodimus walks away from Fort Max after the fallout between he and Optimus Prime. The Matrix Virus caused more destruction than can be counted world-wide. It leaves both Primes with remorse. And counting the lives he took under its influence, Rodimus finds forgiving himself is as elusive as a cure for Void.
