Journal Topics

Journal # 19Media and Peer Pressure – How does the media (movies, music, advertising) increase the problems of peer pressure.  Be specific and give examples.

Journal #20Self-Control – In What areas do you struggle with self-control. What ae the obstacles to overcoming this (selfishness, needing attention, not thinking, not recognizing it is wrong, etc. )What are some consequences you have faces or could face. 

Journal #21  - Confidence Thieves – What and who robs you of your confidence?  Why? What does that say about where you put your confidence?  What is the effect of your lack of confidence.

Journal # 22   Windless Sails – Be honest with yourself and discuss ways you tear down the confidence of other.  Give specific examples – especially for things you have done this week.  Do your feel there are different rules for building confidence with siblings, or with close friends, or  peers?  Evaluate your own friends.  How do they instill confidence in you (not arrogance).

Journal #23 The Perfect Marriage – Using your value sheet, write a paragraph about how your top five values would make a marriage better.  Don’t say things like “if we had humor we could laugh.”  What other qualities do you think would make a good marriage?

Journal #24Set Apart – If you were an alien and came to earth, how would know Christians from non-Christians?  What specific qualities should set a Christian apart?  Are Christians different from “good people” in how they behave?  How can Christian hurt the gospel?

Journal # 25   Principles of Dating – What are your personal principles for dating.  What do you think is the purpose of dating? When do you think a person is ready to date?  What qualities are necessary for you when considering someone to date? What are the boundaries for physical touch and kissing?  What should the parent’s role be in the dating decisions?  What is the best way to avoid compromising standards in a dating relationship?

Journal # 30Christmas Break – Write about five highlights of Christmas break including best gift, best activity, best movie or tv show watched, best family time, and your funniest memory.

Journal # 31Organizationally Impaired – Reflect on your own organization skills.  In what areas are do you tend to be most organized?  Why?  In what areas are you least organized? Why?  If you are honest with yourself, how could organization change your grades, attitude, conflicts in relationships, goals for the future?

Journal # 32Ordering My Future – Write about one of the things from each category of the worksheet and what is required to achieve those goals.

Journal # 33Get Even – What acts of hypocrisy bother you the most?  Do you ever find yourself wanting justice for someone.  Give an example of when your motive for wanting certain results is to “get even.”  

 

Testimony Requirements - Due 4/15

   The purpose of this assignment is to reflect on your personal relationship with Christ and the work of God in your family’s life and your life.  As mundane as you might think your life is, you ARE a miracle of God and He IS at work in you.  I highly recommend that before you begin this assignment, you take time to pray about each portion of the testimony.  Ask God to reveal truths to you that you have perhaps forgotten, or have not considered significant in the past.  Think of your testimony as your letter of thanks to God for all He has done for you.

   The written testimony needs to be typed in MLA format.  When you give your oral presentation, you may not use your written paper, however you may use this piece of paper to trigger your memory. The point is that you should be able to tell ANYONE what God means to you.  Your testimony is simply YOUR story. 

 

The following must be included in your paper and your oral presentation.

  • Family Background – What is the spiritual heritage of your parents?  Were they raised in a Christian home?  When and how were they saved.  You will need to interview them.
  • Your Salvation – Retell the events of your salvation with as much detail as possible.

Include any recommitments you have made and why.

  • Spiritual Training – What is the spiritual climate you were raised in that helped you grow (devotions with family, AWANA’s, youth group, Christian school, retreats, Vacation Bible School, etc.)
  • Past Obstacles – What have been the greatest challenges and obstacles for your faith (death, divorce, family conflict, rebellion,  apathy, friendships, etc.)  How have those obstacles made you stronger (or weaker).
  • Evidence – What has been the greatest evidence of God that you have witnessed? This can included miracles, a personal encounter, worship, creation, resolved conflict, etc.
  • Current Challenges – What is most difficult about being a Christian teenager?
  • Future Faith – What do you fear most about your faith and your future?  If you fear nothing, why not?
  • Gifts – Knowing your personality, strengths, and gifts, how can you be used in high school? How might those same traits cause challenges?
  • Verse – write out a verse that means something to you and explain why. If you don’t have a verse, you can use a lyric to a worship song, a spiritual quote, or a Bible story.
  • Challenge – What challenge would you give to younger students about their Christian life in jr. high?
