Whereas the occupation of computer networking technician, or System Administrator is a highly-rewarded, in-demand jobskill, the College of the Siskiyous, Yreka Campus, could help many students prepare locally for a family- wage job in a relatively short time.
I foresee an ever-expanding need for these kinds of workers, for the near future,
Just as we have to endure having our telephone area zip code changed, because so many people have more than one telephone line, many businesses and organizations will be wanting to have multiple-PC networks, all linked together, and especially linked to the Internet. This includes schools.
I propose that the College of the Siskiyous,
Yreka Campus, establish a specific Career Path in Novell
Netware System Administrator skills, at the Process Technology
Training Center.
The PTTC facility would invest more in computer networking labs, where students can get real HANDS-ON learning experience in Netware, and other networking software systems.
Parallel Career Paths could be developed later, for Windows NT, and other emerging standards. Novell Netware has a well-developed support system, and many documented "lessons", available online from its technical support knowledge base.
Older versions of the networking hardware and Netware software are available from an online auction on the Internet, at affordable prices.
After a student has gained the learning possible from
a slightly older version of Netware, they can quickly
absorb the differences in the new and latest version.
Using slightly older versions as learning lab tools
would allow more students to get real "hands-on" experience at the PTTC.
Whereas many different levels of interest in learning
Novell Netware exist in different students, the PTTC
Netware Program will assist more intense students in knowing how to set
up their own Netware labs at their homes,
inexpensively, using recycled hardware and software,
in addition to providing at least some "hands-on" experience at the facility.
