Elementary School Students talk to Astronaut Onboard ISS
International Space Station (ISS) Flight Engineer Carl Walz, KC5TIE, spoke with the students of Deep Creek Elementary School near Portland Oregon on
March 6, 2002 at 11AM PST via Ham Radio. This amazing educational event was coordinated by Larry Tyree, N6TR and other local Amateur Radio Operators at the School. The Amateur Radio International Space Station school program is world-wide (ARISS). Mentoring assistance to for this event was provided by Kerry Banke, N6IZW.
The down-link radio frequency was 145.8 mhz in the 2 meter Amateur Radio (Ham Radio) band. The Space Station was 250 miles above moving at 17,000 MPH from West to East as it passed above the school in Gresham, Oregon. The window of reception was about 8 minutes.
At the same time, several hundred miles South in California, Greg Greenwood, WB6FZH, located in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest, in Weaverville, was listening and recording the radio signals from the Space Station for you to hear.

NOTE- This Northern California Recording from the WB6FZH ham radio station is very noisy during the first few seconds as the Space Station comes into range of Weaverville, CA (Located between Eureka and Redding, CA), but improves immediately. This "Real Media" file takes about 3 minutes to load at 33K Modem Speed. You will hear only the downlink signal from the Astronaut, with silence during Student uplink questions.- PLAY TIME- 5 minutes-

CONGRATULATIONS!
To all the Students, Teachers, Amateur
Radio Operators and Others that made this special event possible! Your hard
work will inspire others to try and have their own Space Station contact.

The Amateur Radio Operators, School Staff and Volunteers
These Amateur Radio Operators, Staff & Volunteers made the communications between the Space Station Alpha and the Deep Creek Elementary School possible. Their technical abilitites
and sincere interest in wanting the students to experience this very special event possible made it come true- - Webmaster

Space Station & Satellite Tracking Programs
Note: WB6FZH has used STS ORBITS Plus DOS program for satellite tracking and astronmy for years. It was developed by the late Dave Ransom of AZ, for use by governments, institutions and individuals around the world. Dave kept it available at low cost to cover expenses for years, Greg-WB6FZH, paid $10 for a disk in 1989. It appears that the program is nolonger available with Ransom's death, making way for newer windows platform programs.

More Ham Radio and Space Applications
These station locations displayed on this map came from digital data "digipeated" via Ham Radio from ground stations to the Space Station and relayed to Earth. The signals were decoded and sent via the internet from special "gateway" stations to a central computer and displayed as you see them to show the locations of stations. The APRS technology used has many applications including locating stations during Search & Rescue.
