The "Oldtimer" comments on the book...

This wonderful book is just what the doctor ordered for those who relish traveling between Redding and Eureka, along state highway 299 and wonder about the history of each area they pass. This book will give you a special understanding of the people and places that are along the "Trinity Highway". It is wonderful to see pictures of many buildings that are gone now, and many that remain today, standing proudly, just as I remember them years ago in the pages of this book.

Written and edited by Humboldt historians Jerry Rohde and Lowell “Ben” Bennion, travel guide covers the National Scenic Byway along Highway 299 between Redding, in the Sacramento Valley and Arcata-Eureka on the Pacific Coast- providing both practical travel information and a coffee-table memento of the trip. It includes detailed information collected by Humboldt College students throught the years and the Author's exensive research. It includes information on the road itself, area history, natural history, ecology, sights to see, tales of the hardy soles that stayed, directions for short hikes and walking tours of several of the historic towns and appreciation for the River, Lake, County and Highway of Trinity.

In the pages of the "Trinity Highway" you see the many faces of Trinity's past, Native Americans, Chinese Laborers, Settlers, Miners, Storekeepers and the like from all corners of the world. All have made lasting contributions to Trinity, The Northstate and the West

No trip down the "Trinity Highway" could be complete without a visit to the Joss House Temple State Park, in Weaverville or the Jake Jackson Museum. Reminders of the tons of gold removed from Trinity are at every turn, of the highway, and the decendents of those that pioneered Trinity fill the local phone books.

This spectacular Highway region includes miles driving alongside of the Trinity River, with it's legendary fishing, rafting and ofcourse the gold. The Highway has it's gateways to the Trinity Alps and other north coast mountains. At the Western end of the highway Eureka's charming and historic Old Town District is described and will wet your appetite for tales of that area too.

If you are a frequent visitor, or still planning your first visit to Trinity County, you should have this book. After you read the book, the towns, buildings and landmarks you come to know in the pages of the book will seem to almost greet you as an old friend as you travel down the "Trinity Highway".

I recommend this book to all that may use it as a travel guide or as the journey itself...Reviewed 9/2001 By- "The Oldtimer"- The Book was read and comments written by the light of day...no electricity at my cabin yet.

Afterthought... -Many of us that have lived in Trinity for years realize that we are in fact custodians of this special place and do what we can to preserve it for those who come next. For myself, I am here because I was born here, and execept for WW2, I have always been here. I feel I must warn you, many of my new neighbors the last 50 years say they were mysteriously drawn back here to live...along the Trinity Highway. Some folks left everything and nothing and relocated in weeks, and others are working their way here over the years. ...In common to all.....They Traveled The Trinity Highway........"The Oldtimer"

O.K. SHOW ME the "DOWNRIVER" Slide Show....- Pictures of some river areas you pass by when driving the area covered by the book.
