START OF FIRE...Saturday, September 2, 2006- Heard it on scanner...
Voluntary evacuations for the communities of Big Flat and Helena have been in place for several days. Del Loma, Big Bar and Denny are also threatened, if weather conditions change. Highway 299 is open, with escorted travel over a short distance along Hwy 299 near Helena when repairmen are working to replace burned poles and transmission lines. Check with CalTrans, Forest Service or the web sites noted below for trail and road closures before traveling in the area. Fire Danger is still VERY HIGH.
NOTE: Intermittent winds today at Weaverville, 5 - 15 mph, with gusts to 20 mph.
at 8:00 PM winds are calm.
NOTE: 11:55hrs 9/16- Junction City Resident in Lake Road area reports increasing smoke, related to Westerly Winds today. Fire crews continue to gather information to document location of structures, cut brush, use chippers, plan structure protection, etc.
SPECIAL NOTICE - TRINITY RIVER CLOSURE: (NOTE: APPLIES TO FEDERAL FOREST/BLM LANDS...IT MAY NOT APPLY TO PRIVATE PROPERTY or RECREATIONAL BUSINESS that OWNS RIVER-FRONT PROPERTY) -Contact RV,Camping & Resorts for details.
This just came about and I am trying to get the information out, -The USFS has closed the Trinity River to ALL recreation as of this morning, until further notice-. The river is closed from Junction City down to New River - Shast Trinity Nationl Forest Line becaause of the fire and smoke conditions. The only areas that are open to fishing are Lewiston down to Douglas City and Hawkins Bar down to the Klamath. Please Call ahead before you come up. E.B. Duggan- Fishing Guide - Trinity River Fishing Report - www.fishtrinity.com- Trinity's #1 Fishing Website!
Residents and Business Owners asked many questions about the closure of parts of the forest/roads and now the River itself. Issues were discussed like; can you fish in river from private property (non forest land).. THE CLOSURE ONLY APPLIES TO FOREST SERVICE LAND. IF A PROPERTY OWNER/OWNER OWNS LAND FRONTING RIVER, IT DOES NOT APPLY.
Issues about closures of some areas, but no enforcement and logic of some of the locations. FIRE FIGHTER SAFETY and citizen safety are primary concerns. Also the potential volatility of the fire, if there was big wind shift and spot fires.
The fire managers said that they would take the concerns higher up in command structure for possible modification of the current closures/etc.
TCSO U/S Dave Laffranchini reviewed the 48hr Evacuation Advisories, and the fact that the TCSO was not going to force anyone to leave, etc.
THIS IS HUNTING SEASON: Hunters seem to be in CLOSED parts of the Forest. CA Fish and Game says NO refunds on DEER tags due to fire.
