NOAA WeatherRadio 24hr VHF Broadcasts
- The 162.55 mhz Southfork Mountain, WXL-88, NOAA WeatherRadio Station is heard in Weaverville and other parts of Trinity County. It is controlled by the SACRAMENTO Office of NWS.. Wednesdays between 11:00 AM and 12:00 Noon, a test
of the WeatherRadios alarm function is conducted, weather permitting. FAQ about WeatherRadios and the system.
The EUREKA Office of NWS controlls KEC-82, on 162.40 may be heard in Western Trinity and parts of Humboldt County.. from Mt. Pierce. Southern Trinity may be
able to hear the The Pt.Arena, KIH-30, station on 162.55 transmits from Cold Springs in Southern Mendocino County. The , Crescent City-Brookings transmitter, KIH-37, transmits on 162.55, and is located on Palmer Butte in Southern Oregon. The S.A.M.E. Codes and other WeatherRadio information relating to this group of stations is located on the EUREKA Website..The National Weather Service Website can be visited and information about a region or city can be selected..
Based on the inquiries made so far it would appear The S.A.M.E. Broadasts with the Emergency Codes for Trinity County ONLY come from the Eureka and Mendocino Transmitter Sites. This situation is being explored and an update will be posted soon. This does not mean you should not use this valuable service. This situation may likely change, and some types of warnings come from multiple locations. These WeatherRadios are a valuable service to take advantage of.
- NOAA S.A.M.E. Radio
Broadcast Information- Information on NorthWest CA and Southern Oregon areas WeatherRadio Stations.
- The maximum benefits of the SAME ALERT system may not presently realized by the citizens of Trinity County. This should not discourage the purchase and use of the radios. They are none-the-less very useful. Most Scanner Radios equipted with external antenna jack will receive 24hr Weather Information with an OUTDOOR ANTENNA.
- NOAA RECEPTION SUGGESTIONS- Many Ideas!
- OUTDOOR ANTENNAS for scanners or weather radios. The Radio Shack stores sell a simple VHF, UHF groundplane antenna- ($20.00) that clamps on a piece of TV masting or PVC pipe,etc.(1 1/4"). The Antenna Installation requires coaxial cable with a PL-259 connector on one end and a similar connector with an adaptor to plug into your scanner or weather radio. The cable with connector attatched is available in 50' lengths, and adaptors
sold separately. Most scanners use either "Motorola type" male plug, or a "BNC" type adapter from the Male "PL-259" on the coaxial cable. The Radio Shack salesperson can help you in person or on telephone.
- Weather Radios may be designed to receive only NOAA/NWS Weather Broadcasts or you may use a VHF "Scanner" Radio to receive the 24HR Weather Broadcasts. In Redding-Weaverville Area 162.55 is the frequency used. In Southern or Western Trinity or Humboldt County 162.40 is used.

- ARTICLE SOON.. Listing Redding, Eureka and other Area AM Broadcast Stations that are usually audible in Trinity during the day along with other useful information. Presently, on AM: 650khz, 810khz, 1400khz, 1530khz are audible in Weaverville Area.
- There will also be information posted when availiable about various informational broadcasts that may be broadcast at a certain number of minutes past the hour on frequencies a common "Scanner" type radio can be programmed to, and other cooperative ventures with Area Broadcasters during emergencies.
- EXTERNAL ANTENNA- If your AM or FM radio has an external antenna connection, a well engineered outside wire antenna or portable LOOP ANTENNA
antenna will definitely help. There are loop antennas that do not require an external
antenna connetion, but only placement near the radio itself. A good inside loop antenna may be actually better than some outside antennas in some cases.. The C.Crane Company Website has information on AM Antennas and Reception. I depends where you live, or if your home has metal walls, if you live in mountains or a big city, etc.
- AM LOOP ANTENNA PROJECTS- Boost your Reception at a fraction of the cost of a
commercial AM Loop Antenna. NO EXTERNAL CONNECTION IS REQUIRED FOR THIS ANTENNA PROJECT.

- GE Large AM "portable" radios from '60s with CONALRAD emblem good
- Admiral Clipper - 3 Band (AM, Marine and LW)
- Zenith Transoceanic both OLD (tube type) and NEW (transistor) are pretty good AM Radios
- FM ANTENNA- Some TV antennas will work (FM band is between CH 6 and CH7),
or the Radio Shack Stores sell outside antennas and cable. Check to see what kind of connector is required to attach your antenna to the radio. Some "Rabbit Ears" and inside amplified TV/FM antennas will work too. Be aware that some antennas are "Directional", favoring some directions for better reception.

Remember to keep SPARE Alkaline or Lithium BATTERIES for your radios and flashlights! Do leave your batteries in the radios for extended times. Consider removing atleast one battery, or putting them in a plastic bag along with an earphone, pencil & paper.. Keep a spare bulb for your flashlights too. Consider using the same size battery for flashlight and radio.
Rechargeable Batteries with AC or Solar Chargers are also an alternative.
NOTE: There are now on market some inexpensive Alternate Technology Flashlights.
- LED Flashlights. They give good light, with LESS BATTERY DRAIN!.
- Crank (hand generator) Flashlights with standard and LED illumination.
- Shake - Magnito type generator Flashlights. Shake to charge flashlight.(Std. & LED)
