Don't Be Like Anyone Else
Little girl I know it's hard for you
each day leaving home and
being thrust into a group
of other children,
from God only knows where,
but surely they come from places,
homes much different from yours,
and you have to figure out
how to get along with them,
how to understand them,
and in some dream corner
of your heart, how to be liked
by them,
and then sometimes, you will see
some other girl that fascinates you,
catches your eye and you yearn
to be like her, you copy her ways,
her tone of voice, or the parts
of her character that you
admire,
but oh my precious one,
if you only knew how each
time you pick up
a characteristic of someone else
that you loose part of who you are,
you trade, something of you
for something of someone else,
and you take you away from us.
