To re-cap: Henry Rankin was my great-great grandfather. I have a transcript of a short autobiographical paper written circa 1866by his son, Robert G. Rankin, for for the 40th reunion of his class at Yale. In this he writes the following: My father's name was Henry Rankin, a Scottsman by birth, from Kilsyth, where the family had occupied the same homestead for more than three centuries. My father came to this country as a lad, and died here in March, 1841, aged 68 years. He is buried in New York, New York, Marble Cemetery, Vault # 262. He was born June 1773, and died March 1841. !His parents are unknown at this time, but records at the Mormon Library in Salt Lake City show that a HENDRY RANKINE was born in KILSETH, Scotland to HENDRY AND MARGARET REANY (RENNY ? ?) on 27 Jun 1773. Recent information received from a correspondent who has researched the Rankins (Rankines) in Kylsyth seem to strongly support the theory that Henry Rankin's parents were, most probably Hendry Rankine and Margaret Renny. For more information refer to my notes on HENRY RANKIN. In several records, Borehill, Kilsyth is mentioned. It is assumed that Borehill is a local area within Kilsyth, or possibly the name of the Rankine Homestead? At one point the name Berryhill appears to refer to the same place. The data pertaining to the ancestry of Henry Rankin have been furnished to me from several sources, and are so compelling that, until proven otherwise, I am presently considering them to be facts, despite the fact that they are not fully documented. I am indebted to the following persons for the foregoing information on Henry's ancestry: 1. Marilyn Nelligan, for material from IGI Index for the British Isles 2.Anita Carroll, for data from searching Scottish Church Records 3.Andrea Abbassi, for excerpts from Parish Records ****************** Andrea, do you have anything to support a possible connection between the Rankin and Rankine surnames? It may be that Hendry/Henry Rankine/Rankin may have Americanized his name when he came to this country.Does the place name Berryhill/ Borehill ring a bell? I hate to bother you with my ancient history, but I don't know where else to turn. Sincerely, Bill Boyce
