!Note from Ellen Semple Bosak indicates that John Semple was a boatman and coal miner. She also indicates that he lived in Kirkintilloch, Scotland; Chicago, Illinois; and then returned to Kirkintilloch. Also, on a census report, John is listed as being 14 years old, and a chemical worker. Have used this report to compute birth years of the other members of the family.
[(email 18Oct2000 E.Semple:)I talked to Aunt Ellen today. She said that John Semple came over with Nell Semple Smart and her husband Alex Smart and their family. They lived next door to Dan and Martha Semple in Pullman. When the Smart family went back to Scotland, grandpa Semple went with them. Ellen said she was in high school at the time--so it must be in the early 1930's.]
OCCUPATION: 1881 Census gives his occupation as 'Canal Boatman' (like his father, Robert).
RESEARCH: 1891 census extract showed a Jean Semple aged 37 as a daughter of John and Helen. There is clearly some mistake here, either in the age or in the relationship. Scots Origins shows a Jane Semple age 36 - probably the same person.
!a.k.a. "Nell" and "Helen". LDS #C114831 gives birth.
RESEARCH: Attribution of birth and death index records to an individual of this family is somewhat circumstantial, but strongly so:
- 5th son should be named after one of Helen's brothers, probably William since he is oldest
- 'George' is not the name of any of Helen's brothers
- Scots Origins gives name as 'William Rankin Semple' - strongly suggesting he is named after Helen's brother William Rankin
- death at age 10 in 1902 is consistent with lack of any family history for him
