Notes for Martha Shaw Semple:

!In remembrance of Martha, written by Eunice Semple (John's wife) after
Martha's death:

!Lingering memories of a voice, a song, a touch
!Sweet fragrance of a life we loved so much!
!So short the time, (though measured out in years)
!So large the void! So useless are the tears.
!Our hearts cry out, and time stands still
!While we stay numbed and sad
!With eyes that do not see.

!Many things could be written about Martha and her role in the family. After
two or three preganancies which resulted in still-births (due to RH factor),
Ken and Martha gave up hope for children of their own. Yet every year they
gave a wonderful vacation in Detroit to their nieces, Janet Bosak and Margaret
Semple. She also gave a temporary place in her home to her nephew, Dan, when he
was getting situated in a new job at Ford Motor Company after he left Motorola.

!Martha had a beautifully sweet singing voice--she and her sisters,
Ellen and Margaret, had often sung together while growing up. She kept an
immaculately clean home. She was cheerful and a good daughter to Ken's mother
as well as to her own. She was active in their Presbyterian church, and Ken
joined her in activities, even though his mother had been a strong Christian
Scientist: there was mutual respect between the women. Martha had a blood
condition, hypoglycemia, (too many red blood cells) which needed frequent
medical attention as she grew older, but she still made it her high priority to
come to Chicago to assist with the care of her aging mother from time to time.
Hers was a life well-lived.
