Information is from death certificate for son, John Semple. James Semple was a cotton weaver.
TODO: Scots Origins: look for a death record elsewhere in Scotland. A James Semple of appropriate age appears in the 1851 census, living with a Margaret Semple. If this is in fact 'them' it seems likely one or both survived until 1855, and death registry extracts should be available.
Currently show Thomas Semple/Margaret Johnstone, but another possibility is Thomas Semple/Agnes Findlay as the parents (the 'Bruce Semple Bible Genealogy' shows this).
RESEARCH: Parentage is tentative. There appears to be no OPR record to substantiate it. There is an 1841 census record for Margaret Semple (age 50-54) and John Semple (age 60-64) and an 1851 census record for a Margaret Semple (age 62) living with James Semple (age 75). This may be this couple, but the age doesn't fit Margaret very well (she'd be having her first child at about age 10) - so either the census age given for her is wrong or it is a different couple.
However, grand daughter Mary has a son named 'John Gartshore Liddel'. This is highly suggestive that Margaret's son, John, is indeed named for her father John Gartshore, as we have surmised here.
TODO: Scots Origins: look for death record. Check for Margaret Gartshore as well, see if either matches up with:
