Genetics

Excerpts from Jan 12 1997 of Parade Magazine. Pg. 6 by Marilyn Vos Savant.

``As you know, the genetic sex of an individual is determined at the  time of conception by the sperm, which carries either an X or a Y   chromosome to the egg, which has only an X chromosome itself. If the      sperm carries an X, the embryo will be female (XX); if it carries a Y, the     embryo will be male (XY). So regardless of their apparent destiny, all         developing embryos will become feminized unless key masculinizing   influences occur at proper times. That is, EVERY embryo (male and    female) contain structures capable of developing into EITHER male or    fermale sex organs.``

The male structure is named Wolferian and the female is named Mullerian,   respectively.

``Only at a later key point do they began to differentiate, but this     requires activity. And only if activity occurs properly can any XY embryo      get headed in the direction of becomming a male. If this does not occur, all     embryos head in the direction of becomming females, almost be default,
regardless whether they are genetically males or females.`

The key point of the Wolferian system to develop, for males, is between the 6th  to 10th week after conception, whereas the Mullerian system will develop into   female between the 8th to 12th weeks after conception. So, if anything goes awry,
then the male system may start to develop, pause, then the female system may also  begin to develop. Usually when the male system begins to develop a signal is sent to  the female system not to develop; however, if all is not functioning properly, then the  male system may pause and the female system develop.
